Season by Season
Spring (March to May)
Highs climb from about 12 °C in March to 18 °C in May, and rain becomes less frequent each month. March brings some of the highest tides of the year. April is busier at Easter. May is one of the best months, but avoid 1 May, when the abbey is closed, and expect crowds on the long weekends.
Summer (June to August)
This is the warmest and driest season, with highs of 21 to 23 °C. The abbey stays open until 7 p.m., and evening sound-and-light visits run in summer. June is calmer than July and August. In high summer the village streets are packed from late morning to mid-afternoon, so plan your visit for the start or the end of the day.
Autumn (September to November)
September is still warm, with highs of about 21 °C, and the equinox tides return. October is cooler and much wetter, with good light and fewer people. By November the Mont is quiet, and it is one of the wettest months of the year.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is the quiet season. Highs are about 9 to 10 °C, the days are short and rain is frequent, so bring a waterproof jacket. The abbey is open every day except 25 December and 1 January. Visitor numbers rise during the Christmas and February school holidays.
The Best Time of Day
About three million people visit Mont Saint-Michel each year, and roughly one million of them come in summer. The peak recorded day was 36,000 visitors, on 18 August 2022. Most arrive on day trips, which is why the busiest hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The public body that manages the site advises visiting before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. In practice:
- Early morning. Go straight up to the abbey when it opens, then walk the ramparts and the village on the way down.
- Late afternoon and evening. The village empties as the day-trip coaches leave. From May to August the abbey is open until 7 p.m., so an arrival at 4 p.m. still leaves time to see it. Check the last admission time before you go.
- Midday. If you can only come at midday, choose a weekday outside the French school holidays.
Tides: When Mont Saint-Michel Becomes an Island
The tide comes in and goes out twice a day, but the Mont is only fully surrounded by water on a few days each month. This happens when the tide coefficient is above 110. The highest tides come around the new and full moon, and the biggest of the year fall near the March and September equinoxes.
To watch the sea arrive, be on site two hours before high tide. The water moves in at about 6 km/h. Check the tide timetable published by the Mont Saint-Michel tourist office before you choose your date.
Do not walk out into the bay on your own. The tide and the sands are dangerous, and the regional tourist board advises crossing only with a licensed guide.
Days to Avoid or Plan Around
- 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. The abbey is closed. The village stays open.
- July and August, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The busiest hours of the busiest months.
- Weekends in May and June with a public holiday. French long weekends fill the car parks early.
- French school holidays. February, Easter and late October are busier than the weeks around them.
- One-off changes. The abbey sometimes opens late or closes for a day. Look at the tourist office notices

On a day trip you usually arrive in the middle of the day, so the month matters more than the hour. May, June and September are the easiest months for a midday visit.
